Lady Gaga - Telephone (Official Clean Version) ft. Beyoncé

I have decided to include this video for one certain part of it, the clips from 8:13 to 8:29 have really inspired me to add this technique into my video. I really like how it is only one small part of a clip shortened down and then repeated. This is more a stylistic technique in this video, but in my work I will have used it to make the subject look supernatural.

candle ritual

This is an amateur clip of an ‘imaginary ritual’. I decided to use this video as research because I don’t have the use of a professional video camera so I will just be using the video feature on my digital camera. One of the effects of using this is that the light off the candles makes a blue light in the shape of a line. I don’t know whether this will bother me at all because this could possibly make my nightmare sequence much more surreal.

【CM】呪怨 パンデミック

This short clip from the horror film ‘The Grudge 2’ uses a technique that I would like to use in my work. I really like it how the grudge girl gets closer and closer to the camera, but you only see certain parts of her walking. I will use this in my nightmare sequence as I find this quite scary and I want the nightmare to be scary as well as weird. I don’t think I will use the use of lights like the video as I don’t really have use of them. I will however tape it in my back garden (like the rest of the nightmare).

Pan's Labyrinth full length trailer

This is the trailer for the film Pan's Labyrinth, and I have decided to look at it for some extra research. One of the first things I noticed about it is that it uses both the light and the dark to manipulate the audiences. The film is a Spanish fantasy film with some occasional horror clips, I like that the film uses light in some horror scenes because it breaks the traditional technique of using the darkness to scare the audiences. When using light, the audience will be able to see everything that is going on which is also a strong technique to use. On the other hand, I will use the darkness quite a lot so that the audience cannot see what else is going on apart from what I show them. This adds extra tension and suspense to the video so the audience will be wondering if anything is in the background. I will use the light and the dark to contrast the two characters in my video (killer & nightmare= dark, victim = light).

This is a music video directed by Sönke Held for the electronic musician Felix Kubin. The video is basically showing a man bringing a woman back to life, and supernatural happenings in the house that they are in. I really like the mis-en-scene in this video, especially the settings. I like the decaying walls and how the whole house in very run down. In my work, I hope that I can find a wall like this to use somewhere in it. Also, I really like the use of light and shadows, the build up the tension and keep the audience on edge as they cannot always see what is happening. Probably one of the best bits of the video is where the male lead has the lightning bolts in his hands (2:05) and is moving them around. I like this editing technique of making the character jitter and repeat himself; I will definitely use this in my work as it can seem unnatural.
Another part of this video that I like is the soft green/blue tone over the top of everything; this makes the video seem mystical. I may use a tone over the top of my video to take it look like this, but this just depends on how good the lighting in the video is. At 2.20 in the video, the female lead is seen to split from her soul; this is something that I will be using in my work. Once I have ‘killed’ the character, his soul will come out him and leave him. I decided to use this technique to show the audience that he is definitely not alive anymore.
One more part of this video that I like is where the female lead starts to dance after being brought back to life (1.46 – 2.00). I don’t think that I will include dancing in my video, but I will definitely use some of the angles that are used. I like how the power shifts from the female to the male and the camera is moved from looking up at her, to then looking down at her.

The Nightmare Before Christmas Special Edition Trailer

This is the trailer for Tim Burton's 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'. I chose to look at just the trailer because there is no specific part of the film I am looking at, I am just looking at the settings and the characters. I really like the gothic looking background, complete with spider webs and gravestones, this is very good use of props and I would like to try and use some in my nightmare sequence of the video. The characters are all quite extravagant, with masks and face paint on. I would really like to use a mask in my sequence to hide the identities of my characters, make up wouldn't be so good at hiding it.

I also really like the use of shadows and darkness, I would like to make my nightmare sequence in the dark, outside and use a torch as a spotlight. This would make it more believable as a nightmare, and not reality. Also, I might make my nightmare in black and white, therefore it is seperate from the story that is happening in reality.

This photographer has taken a self portrait in a bathtub with blood rising up from the bottom. I really like this because the model could either be dead or it could represent how she is feeling trapped in the real world. I would really like to use water in my video but I don't have the use of a bath. I could always just try and use a friends or find a big bucket or box to overcome this.
